Workplace trend, innovation, or idea I’m thinking about—

It’s been widely adopted that psychological safety is the number one trait of the most successful teams. In fact, Google spent years researching psychological safety—putting it above all else when it comes to team success. On this note, I’ve been thinking about what psychological safety truly means and considering what functional skills people need in order to embrace it.

When discussing psychological safety, I’ve noticed many people cringe at the concept. For some reason, people take an extreme stance, thinking psychological safety is all about being “nice.” (Which, by the way, what’s wrong with being nice?!) But I wonder why there are such extremes. Why are people either ‘nice’ or ‘mean’ at work?

What I’m reading or listening to—

Along with the Amy Edmondson article above and her subsequent book, The Fearless Organization, I’m also reading Own the Room, a book about leadership and communication. I’ve been talking to a lot of people about assertive communication, how to use it in their day-to-day, and overall, how to strengthen their voice. Love the concepts in this book about developing communication skills and executive presence.

“Everything works out the way it’s meant to.” 

I have no idea who to credit, but this is something I’ve been reinforcing with myself lately!

What we’re up to at Sayge—

I just joined a panel of fellow alumni from our accelerator program, Acceleprise. We talked about getting the most out of the program and learning from other founders. It was such a refreshing conversation about being humble during this process, learning on the fly and embracing peers along the journey!
