Blind Recruitment, Setting the Table, & Courage

Welcome to the November 2019 edition of ‘The Monthly Mindset,’ an email series where Katie Stricker, President and Co-founder, shares a few things she’s thinking about, plus a look into what Sayge is up to.

Workplace trend, innovation, or idea I’m thinking about—

I’ve been thinking about the impact of blind resumes reviews, an approach that falls within ‘blind recruitment.’ Fast Company defines blind recruitment as, “…the practice of removing personally identifiable information from the resumes of applicants including their name, gender, age, education, and even sometimes the number of years of experience.” Forbes reports that companies like Deloitte and Ernst & Young embrace blind hiring.

By masking identities during the application review stage, I believe we could eliminate some of our preconceived notions—helping us focus on a candidate’s character, rather than their identities.

What I’m reading or listening to—

I always look for reading inspiration from friends and family. A while ago, I was excited to find out that Sayge Co-Founder, Jamie Bryan, is a big fan of Danny Meyer’s book, Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business. After I saw Meyer speak at a conference, I finally picked up his book and it does not disappoint.

I can relate to Meyer’s Midwestern upbringing. And his ‘put your people first’ ethos is inspiring beyond words. At one point, Meyer writes, “Business, like life, is all about how you make people feel. It’s that simple and it’s that hard.” I mean, who can argue with that? Highly recommend!

Quote I’m thinking about—

“Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.” —George Sheehan

What we’re up to at Sayge—

In October, Sayge got to support some awesome events! We joined Berlin Cameron for an event focused on mental health at work, “From Workplace to Safe Space,” where we discussed topics like ways to be a more supportive co-worker. Later in the month, we sponsored a Talent Panel titled, “Empower Yourself for the Future of Work,” part of the Work Awesome Conference.
